Tire Rotation and Wheel Alignment: How Can They Extend Tire Life?
Tires on the same truck can wear differently depending on axle position, load and operating conditions. Proper Tire rotation and regular wheel alignment checks can help reduce irregular wear, extend Tire life and lower cost per kilometre (CPK).
1. Tire Rotation: Promoting More Even Wear
Steer, drive and trailer axles operate under different conditions, resulting in different wear patterns. When carried out in accordance with vehicle and Tire manufacturers’ recommendations, appropriate Tire rotation can improve Tire utilisation and make replacement and retreading plans more predictable.
2. Wheel Alignment: Reducing Irregular Wear
Incorrect wheel alignment can accelerate Tire wear and shorten Tire life. If you notice one-sided wear, feathering or significant differences in wear between Tires on the same axle, check the alignment settings, Tire pressures and suspension condition promptly.
Regular alignment checks, particularly after repairs or significant impacts to the vehicle, can help reduce premature Tire replacement.
Tire value depends not only on the purchase price but also on the actual mileage achieved. For example, a €400 Tire that lasts 100,000 km has a CPK of €0.004/km, while a €450 Tire that lasts 150,000 km has a CPK of €0.003/km—a 25% lower cost per kilometre.
Effective Tire maintenance can improve Tire utilisation, optimise replacement intervals and reduce CPK. Regularly checking tread depth, recording mileage and addressing irregular wear promptly can help fleets manage Tire life and operating costs more effectively.
At PAXXON, we focus not only on the purchase price of a Tire, but also on the value it delivers throughout its entire service life.
